I wasn't sure what I was going to get here but was pleasantly suprised. Rustic brown with a sweet, malty taste. Turning sharper in the aftertaste.

The use of traditional Yorkshire Square fermenting vessels enables Imperial to get its unique character from not one but three yeasts. The result is a dark amber, 4.3% ABV beer with a balance of pear drop tasting fruitiness and a deep malty aroma. However there is a rather astringent character which makes this an unimpressive but just about passable ale.

First sampled this mild in Sedburgh, July 1991. Ruby black in colour with a thin white creamy head. Slight roasted malt in the aroma with decent mouthfeel. Slight nutty texture with a hint of plain chocolate and dry dusty black malt. Balanced aftertaste with a sweet finish.

This ale is not the same as it used to be only a few years ago. The aroma and taste have both changed and the beer is no longer distinctive. I would not be able to recognise the new ale in a blind tasting which I certainly would have been able to with the original. That said the beer is creamy and smooth with a slightly fruity maltiness and certainly not unpleasent. For this reason it scores a worthwhile 5.5 which is not bad considering this is a completely new ale!

I have had some great beers recently but this wasnt one of them. I am giving this my crap pint of the month award. Amber in colour it looked quite promising. Oh dear! There was a slightly nutty aroma but the taste was dreadful. Bordering on offensive all ale lovers should avoid this like a dose of the clap. God only knows who brews this stuff? They should be lined up and shot. This is simply awful!
