| First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in January 1993. Pale mahogany in colour with large white frothy head. Slight metalic tang of hop resin in aroma with thin mouthfeel. Pale malt base giving robust digestive malt overtones with slight gooseberry notes. Hoppy aftertaste with metallic tang in the dry finish. |

| Darkish beer with a malty taste. Quite enjoyed the pint as the others on offer were awful. Would try again. |

I drank the bottled version at 6.3%. Coffee, dundee cake, a well balanced bitterness. Not huge depth, but a pleasant drink - this is how dark English beer tastes (but with a killer strength in the bottled version!). Leaves a nice warm fuzzy glow. (7/10)
Update: Have now also tried the draught version at a relatively meagre 4.7%. Initially rich, malty, smooth - went down very easily. Aftertaste a little weak and watery, bitter but well balanced. Very pleasant. (7/10)
The draught version is weaker-tasting than the bottled version, and different flavours are apparently (notably malt rather than fruit). Both are good drinks, and I couldn't actually recommend one over the other (I'd choose the draught year-roundwhen I was having a laugh with my mates, and the bottle in front of a fire on a cold winter's day!), but I don't know how Adnams can call them the same beer! |
